With the strong support of all sectors of society, the 2012 China Tourism Science Annual Conference (the 4th) was held grandly at the Beijing Overseas Chinese Building from April 21 to 22, 2012. Du Jiang, deputy director of the National Tourism Administration, attended the annual conference and delivered a speech. Dai Bin, president of the China Tourism Research Institute, presided over the opening ceremony in the morning and made a summary speech at the conference in the afternoon of the 22nd. This annual conference was themed "Problem-oriented and Theoretical Construction". It was hosted by the China Tourism Research Institute and co-organized by Ctrip.com. Sohu Travel Channel broadcast the annual conference online. In his speech, Deputy Director Du Jiang said that the development of my country's tourism industry needs such a conference to bring together our think tanks to form a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of tourism phenomena. The theme of this annual conference is "Problem-oriented and Theoretical Construction", which is very consistent with the needs of China's rapidly developing tourism industry.

He pointed out that in recent years, China's tourism research has made gratifying progress. According to information provided by the China Tourism Academy, more than 40,000 papers on tourism are published in journals in China each year, accounting for 0.8% of the total number of articles, which is a remarkable achievement. However, it should also be noted that there is still a lot of room for improvement in the academic community's attention to some major tourism practice issues, especially in terms of forward-looking thinking and scientific guidance. He emphasized that with the development of tourism theory today, the focus of work should be shifted to the conclusions and results of its own tourism industry, and the tendency of instrumentalism and the tendency of discussing issues on a case-by-case basis should be overcome. The essentiality and regularity of specific phenomena should be further explored. Scientific theory is an abstraction of specific practice. Only theories based on practice and higher than practice can play a more universal guiding role in practice. Nearly 200 people, including responsible comrades of relevant departments and directly affiliated units of the National Tourism Administration, representatives of the annual meeting sponsors, and tourism experts from all over the country, attended the annual meeting. Mr. Tang Lan, Vice President of Ctrip.com, delivered a speech at the annual meeting. Liu Xiaojun, Director of the Policy and Regulations Department of the National Tourism Administration, announced the 2012 National Tourism Administration scientific research project list and the 2011 Outstanding Academic Achievement Award list on behalf of the National Tourism Administration and presented awards.

Zhang Dong, Vice President of the China Tourism Academy, hosted the keynote speech session in the morning.
Professor Zhang Lingyun, academic committee member of China Tourism Academy and vice dean of School of Tourism of Beijing Union University, and Professor Xiao Honggen of School of Tourism and Hotel Management of Hong Kong Polytechnic University delivered keynote speeches on the topics of "New Path of Smart Tourism to Transform Tourism Growth Mode" and "New Knowledge Paradigm and Scientific Development of China's Tourism" respectively; Professor Wang Jingwu, winner of the first prize of Excellent Annual Conference Paper and Professor of Beijing Technology and Business University, and Professor Sun Jiuxia, winner of the first prize of Excellent Academic Achievement Award and School of Tourism of Sun Yat-sen University, delivered special speeches on the topics of "Questioning the Academic Status of 'Hard-core' Tourism Experience" and "Community Tourism and Community Participation in Tourism Anthropology" respectively.

The afternoon conference was divided into three sub-forums, where tourism experts and industry representatives conducted in-depth and detailed round-table discussions on issues such as the value orientation and paradigm formation of tourism research, major issues in tourism industry practice, and the transformation of academic achievements in tourism research.

Afterwards, Dai Bin, President of the China Tourism Research Institute, presented the Outstanding Paper Award to the winners of the 2012 China Tourism Science Annual Conference.

Finally, Dean Dai Bin made a summary speech, in which he pointed out that young scholars should study with the mentality of "establishing a heart for heaven and earth, establishing a life for the people, inheriting the lost knowledge of the past sages, and creating peace for all generations". The older generation of tourism scholars have guided the growth of young people with encouragement and tolerance, laying a good foundation for the development of tourism. Young people should cherish such opportunities. He emphasized that whether studying China's current problems or building a real tourism discipline, one must have a sense of historical consciousness and be able to endure loneliness. He hopes that young people will step on solid ground and study with a "head bowing to the ground" mentality in the process of future discipline construction, so that they can live up to this era and this country.

On the morning of the 22nd, the conference held a seminar on "Lean Service Promotes Smart Tourism". Dean Dai Bin and Vice President Tang Lan delivered keynote speeches on the themes of "Let the humanistic spirit guide the technological innovation of travel services" and "Use technological innovation to create lean services to promote smart tourism". Guests and industry representatives held a roundtable discussion on "Exploration of the value of lean services for smart tourism" and "Practice and discussion on the scalability of lean service systems", and answered questions from the media and young scholars.
